Building a studio and learning to broadcast in radio and tv at Samstöðin
2022-4
When I began my NAIP studies, I was working at a small media station, Samstöðin. Over time, the station has grown and become more professional.
Samstöðin has two studios: a larger one (Studio A) and a smaller one (Studio B). Studio B was originally a kitchen, but I transformed it into a soundproofed studio (see Figure 3) in 2023. I enlisted the help of technicians and carpenters to advise on the best ways to soundproof the room. I installed a false ceiling with the assistance of Hrappur Magnússon, a carpenter. I also double-insulated two of the walls and covered all of them with thick floorboard mats to ensure soundproofing. Then, I set up a Blackmagic editing board, cameras, a mixer, microphones, and a prompter for recording readigs. Before that the larger studio, Studio A, had been in the making.
The building and bolstering of the red table was a special challenge for me (see Figure 4). The table is covered with sponge and vinyl and features holes for microphones as part of an experiment to reduce noise. The microphones do not touch the table but stand on the floor, ensuring that any fiddling or tapping on the table will interfere less with the sound quality.
During my time at Samstöðin, we transformed it from a podcast station into a full-fledged radio and TV station. I learned everything from applying for the necessary permits with institutions and distribution companies to mastering the technical aspects, such as computer software, logging processes, mixers, cameras, lights, and how to use a Blackmagic broadcast mixer.
This project was a massive experiment. It taught me not only about soundproofing but also about the technical aspects of media production. I learned how sound and images are transmitted from the studio to a large antenna on a high building in the city. Additionally, I worked as a journalist there for almost two years, writing news and participating in the main talk show, The Red Table. Before that, I had my own show from 2021 at Samstöðin, which gave me valuable experience in interviewing people, and I produced over 65 episodes. I then had the opportunity to use Studio B for my final project, Identity".
